Stained Glass – “Being In the Moment”
A couple of years back when Oprah did her worldwide web broadcast featuring Eckhart Tolle, I became a student and participated in the the journey.
So what has that got to do with stained glass you may wonder?
For anyone that has read “A New Earth” you know that it teaches us how to ‘live in the moment’.
What I found was ‘living in the moment’ gave the process of being a stained glass artist a different experience.
As I came to understand being in the “Now”, I noticed I was enjoying my stained glass art more than ever.
Instead of thinking about the next step of the stained glass piece I was working on, or thinking about something else while I was grinding a piece of glass, I learning how to just be present with what I was doing.
I learned to focus on the piece of glass I had in my hand.
My skills of cutting, grinding and soldering became more accurate.
The result? I was enjoying working on my stained glass projects more than ever, and my finished work was better.
Stained glass patterns I draw take on the same process.
I don’t wonder what I will do next or how quickly I can produce a pattern.
Instead, I enjoy the process, one line at a time. If we don’t enjoy our lives as we go and are always thinking something else is better than we may find ourselves discontent at times.
Building a Stained glass piece is a fantastic way to learn to ‘Be In the Moment” and that is very good therapy!
If you are not a stained glass artist, maybe having a some great pages to color with felt or paints would be a good source of learning to “Be In the Moment” as well.
